TRIP REPORT TEMPLATE
for when I climb at Whitney Portal....

Routes we climbed:
Ideas:

Beckey Route on Bastille Buttress (5.10d A0, 15p, 2000')
An awesome adventure on a beautiful 2,000' granite buttress on the North Ridge of Lone Pine Peak. A "sleeper" classic that was recently published in Fred Beckey's 100 Favorite Climbs book.

No Country for Old Men on Whitney Portal Buttress (5.10c, 8p, 900')
A modern classic and one of the best in Whitney Portal. Ghostrider might have better rock quality, but No Country has more varied and memorable climbing and fewer crowds on the route. It's also a step up in difficulty from Ghostrider.

Ghostrider on Whitney Portal Buttress (5.10c, 8p, 800')
Great route -- well-protected face cruxes and some wild, varied trad climbing on pitches 1-3, transitioning abruptly to sport-bolted knob pulling for the next 5 pitches. You can leave your packs in the bowl atop P4 if you plan to rap the route, since you will pass by here on the way down and won't need the gear after this point.

Nimbus on Whitney Portal Buttress (5.10c, 3p, 400')
This route follows the obvious arete and crack system located on the right-most end of Whitney Portal Buttress. The route can be seen from afar. Look for the clean left-curving crack halfway up the wall and you've found the crux second pitch.

Beckey Route on El Segundo Buttress (5.9, 5p, 750')
Climb an awesome crack to killer vertical dikes and cracks.

Premier Route on Premier Buttress (5.10c, 3p, 520')
Grainy cracks to beautiful moderate face climbing above.

Bony Fingers on The Whale (5.10c, 2p, 300')
Bony Fingers features an incredible 90m finger crack! If it weren't for the knobs, this steep, beautiful splitter would be 5.12 instead of 5.9.

Omer's Route on El Gaucho (5.8 R, 2p, 300')
Great shallow crack and chickenhead climbing.

North Ridge on Lone Pine Peak (12944) (5.5, 1500')
Lone Pine Peak is the massive formation that looms over the town of Lone Pine. Lone Pine Peak hosts a variety of long climbs on white granite.
North Ridge is in Croft's The Good, Great, and the Awesome. Mostly 4th class climbing with a couple sections of up to 5.4. A fun, easy, and accessible peak for the aspiring alpinist.

South Face of Charlotte Dome (12944) (5.8, 12p, 1200')
A route on solid rock in a magnificent position. The South Face of Charlotte Dome has hundreds of different variations. We have provided a topo of the easiest way to climb the face. However, because it is easy to get off-route, you should be confident leading 5.9 before climbing this route. You should also be confident placing gear on discontinuous and devious cracks. The rock and the climbing are reminiscent of Tuolumne Meadows: long, smooth faces that appear to be impossible from a distance are actually covered with knobs and texture, allowing for relatively easy climbing. Many water grooves and solution pockets make the climbing additionally manageable and totally unique (how often do you get to climb “furrows”?).
